Wegovy is a GLP 1 receptor agonist. It works by increasing insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon secretion and slowing gastric emptying. Appetite is reduced, satiety increases (sensation of fullness) and as a consequence there is associated weight loss.
The SUSTAIN 10 trial demonstrated that wegovy was three times more effective than saxenda with respect to weight loss. Actual weight loss varies between patients and requires other lifestyle interventions including diet and exercise. The medication will be stopped if you have not lost 5% of your bodyweight by week 12 of your attendance at the weight loss service.
You will be considered if your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more.
If you do not meet the above BMI criteria. There are other conditions such as type 2 diabetes where it is not appropriate. Dr Thompson will carefully assess your medical history to determine if Wegovy or other weight loss injections are indicated.
Wegovy is a once weekly subcutaneous injection from a pre-filled pen device. Dr Thompson will guide you through this simple process.
Wegovy is generally very well tolerated. Some patients (<20%) experience mild nausea when they first initiate the medication but this usually settles quickly. Dr Thompson can support you through this and adjust doses if necessary.
